The Importance of Reading at the Correct Reading Level

There are three categories of reading levels; independent, instructional, and frustration.  Independent reading levels are text a reader reads at 95% or greater accuracy and 90% comprehension.  This is the level a child should be reading at when reading on their own.  Instructional reading levels are text read with 90 to 94% accuracy and at least 75% comprehension.  This is the level where the reader needs guided instruction.  Frustration reading levels are text read with less than 90% accuracy.  Readers reading at this level are reading text that is beyond their present ability.
